It May Be Time to Walk in an Employer’s Shoes

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Linda Matias If you are in a job search and arent receiving viable hits, its time to walk a mile in an employers shoes. Okay, I realize what you may be thinking. For just one day, you would like an employer to walk in your shoes so they can be sympathetic to the stresses you are going through on a daily basis. That makes sense, since what most of us want is to be understood by others. However, when I suggest you take the time to put yourself in the position of an employer, that isnt meant to minimize the realities and responsibilities of your world. Your responsibilities sit across from you at the dinner table every night and they miraculously appear in your mailbox every month. On the other hand, just as you would like to be understood, so do employers. And though you dont have control over an interviewer, you have full control over what you decide to do during your job search. A bad hire costs a company a lot of money, and they have their own concerns. A fundamental way to get ahead in the job search is to understand an employers perspective because their point of view is their truth, and their truth dictates how they will react. It will serve you well to understand what a bad hire costs a company. Three Biggest Concerns of the Hiring Manager 1. We all have been there, working in a department where there is an unproductive employee who insists on making waves; someone who has their own agenda and refuses to play by the rules. Perhaps you are searching for a job right now because of unbearable circumstances in your workplace. This is precisely what hiring managers are afraid of: losing good workers because of the actions of a bad employee. That cost is immeasurable. 2. A hiring manager puts his or her reputation on the line when choosing to endorse a candidate. And that is exactly what a hiring manager is doing when submitting a name for consideration. If they make a bad hiring decision, their ability to make sound decisions is questioned. 3. An employee is a representative of a company and a bad hire can have an adverse effect on relationships with vendors and/or customers. Employers fear the loss of valuable relationships that can result from the actions of an employee. Therefore, employers want to scrutinize the personality of candidates before an offer is extended. Ways to Alleviate a Hiring Managers Concern BEFORE the Interview Research the hiring organization. I know. I know. You have read this before. This isnt new information. But it is worth repeating because chances are that you have gone on interview after interview without conducting research. Do your homework on the hiring organization and on industry trends. This is the number one way to uncover a hiring organizations concerns. Dont underestimate the power of your resume. Your resume can address employers hidden concerns with ease, by speaking to your ability to deliver results, work in a team environment, and lead others to achieve organizational goals. The resume you submit to employers is one of the most powerful tools you have full control over. Create the best presentation you can. Be positive. Negativity is a deal killer. Let go of all that has gone wrong in your job search. Attend each interview feeling confident about your qualifications and what you can bring to the table. Ways to Alleviate a Hiring Managers Concern DURING the Interview Meet concerns head on. Find out exactly what an employer is looking for by simply asking one question during the interview. Thinking back to the last person who held this position, what were his or her strengths, and what areas needed improvement? Then listen to what the interviewer says and connect your responses to the employers needs. Dont act like a politician. One of the major complaints we have when it comes to politicians is that they never answer the question posed by the reporter, but rather they provide an answer that makes the point they want to bring forward. And this exact quality is what most job seekers do in an interview. Take the time to answer the questions the interviewer poses. If you arent forthcoming, the interviewer is likely to conclude you are attempting to hide something. Demonstrate interest. If you want to continue participating in the interview process, ask the interviewer the following: Ms. Rodriguez, I am sincerely interested in the position and would like to participate in the next round of interviews. What is the next step? Ways to Alleviate a Hiring Managers Concern AFTER the Interview Send a thank-you note. Send a thank-you note to every person with whom you interviewed and reconfirm your interest in working for the company. If there was a topic of concern that you feel needs further discussion, briefly tackle the topic in your missive. Follow up with a phone call. During the interview, ask the interviewer if you can follow up in two weeks. Then make sure you do! Being In-Between Religions

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Lois Grant-Holland Who said religion has to last a lifetime? When I was in my thirties, people used to ask me what religion I was. Id stutter a little bit and then explain that I was, by my own definition, in-between religions. It raised a lot of eyebrows, but my answer always made perfect sense to me. I had outgrown the religion I grew up in and drifted away from the church of my youth, but I hadnt found a new religion that fit my adult lifestyle and my adult beliefs yet. I still believed in God, and did the best I knew how to be a good person without weekly guidance from my Sunday School teacher. It never occurred to me then (although Ive heard enough about it since) that separating from a church was the same to some people as separating from God himself; I was surprised that anyone would consider God and a church or should I say God and THE church as one and the same. My light-hearted response about being in-between religions was usually met with disapproval, although I really never understood why. If people can be in-between jobs, or in-between houses, or in-between marriages, why cant they be in-between religions? If a person is in-between jobs, theyre unemployed. If theyre in-between houses, theyre moving. If theyre in-between marriages, theyre single. But if God forbid! theyre in-between religions, most religions consider them lost. I will admit that its easy to GET lost when youre in-between religions, because there are literally thousands of paths you can wander down in your search for spiritual truth, if you consider all of the different sects within each major religion in the world. Christianity alone has literally thousands of truths to choose from; Hinduism has well over a thousand Gods. Its no wonder that the serious seeker can spend years just checking out the options; it may well be decades before they start drawing any conclusions of their own. Being in-between religions isnt right for everybody. Some people are happy where theyre at, and some people arent, and thats okay. Just because your brother attends the same church with his wife and children that your parents attended with you as a child doesnt mean you have to follow the family tradition. Im not saying for one minute that family tradition doesnt have an awful lot to do with our religious beliefs (or disbeliefs, as the case may be). The way our family looked at, dealt with, and talked about religion serves as the invisible cornerstone on which our own beliefs are built. Even if we come from solid stock who never looked at, dealt with or talked about religion, the inferred unimportance of it all still serves as that cornerstone as we reach adulthood. Theres something emotional (happy or sad) about giving up things from our childhood. Its amazing how many adults still have their teddy bears, and even more amazing how many adults never owned a teddy bear at all. If its true that you cant miss what you never had, why do some grownups feel traumatized because they never had a bear of their very own to sleep with? Why are so many adults (I hesitate to say most adults) traumatized because of the religious beliefs their family did or did not instill in them as children? Because we were children, and we believed what the grown-ups told us, regardless of who the grown-ups were or what they had to say for themselves. They were grown-ups, and that made them smarter than us. They were the voice of experience; we knew they were wise because they were all ancient. By the time we were half-way through school, we knew they werent only smart, they were right. Always. They knew what they were talking about, and we usually got punished if we talked back or asked too many questions, which is probably why I still have some confusion in my own mind about where the fine line between smart-aleck and bright, inquisitive child lies. And they stuck up for each other. Parents were always telling us that the teachers and preachers in our lives knew what was best for us, even though the parents didnt go to school with us all day every day and very seldom sat in on our Sunday School class to hear what we were being taught. Grown-ups stuck together, and their power in our lives in our minds, and our hearts, and our bodies and our spirits was summarized in one word: adult. They taught us in a million unspoken words who we should be, how we should be it, and what we should be doing with our lives. And because they were grown-ups we accepted their definitions as our own. And thats the way its supposed to be, because children of all ages need lots of help staying on the straight and narrow. One of my favorite quotes from the Christian Bible says, When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. (I Corinthians 13:11, NIV). Putting childish ways behind you is just another way of saying, I began to think for myself, as an adult. I became a grown-up, and took responsibility for who I am and what I do in and with my life. I have the ultimate respect for the truths that others taught me when I was too young to think for myself. I also still think the dress I wore at my piano recital when I was in the second grade was beautiful, and the Ginger doll I played with for years on end was the most wonderful toy ever invented. I still think Captain Kangaroo was the best pretend friend a kid could want, and Annette Funicello was the most beautiful female in the world, especially when she wore her Mouseketeer ears. My mother was, without a doubt, the center of the whole universe, and I was blessed with food when there were children starving in China. Those were some of my truths, when I was a child who talked like a child, thought like a child, and reasoned like a child. The fact that I was a child didnt make them any less true, for me anyway. But that was then, and this is now, and like most adults Ive put childish ways (and truths) behind me. Ive had lots of favorite dresses during the course of my years, and spend almost as much time with my computer as I did with my Ginger doll. The Captain has been replaced with real male friends and a gorgeous rock idol or two along the way; Annette was pretty, but not nearly as beautiful as my own children came to be. Some things never change: my mother will always be my mother, and there will always be children starving somewhere in the world, no matter how much of my uneaten food she sends them. Life changes, and if were wise enough, and brave enough our truth about life will change, too. We have to remember that change is the only constant in our lives; if were not changing, were being stagnant, and if were being stagnant, were wasting this precious gift called life. Its okay to wonder if what we were taught as a child does or does not apply to our adult life and our grown-up ways; its okay to put those ways behind us if they dont fit us anymore. It takes a lot of courage and strength of character to step outside the box of established religion and look for a spiritual truth that will work for you all day, everyday, with no loopholes and no exceptions. Like life, truth is fluid, and we can go with the flow of our spiritual quest a whole lot more comfortably if we are willing to answer the question what religion are you? with a simple Im in-between religions. The Folly of Diet Recipes

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Virginia Bola, PsyD Have you ever wondered why diet books always seem to have a section of recipes? Apart from the desire to make the book look larger and therefore more worthwhile, why should we be so interested in studying foods and ways to serve it when we are trying to avoid it as much as possible? It is inconceivable that we have reached adulthood without the basic skills to boil, bake, steam, or roast our food. We all know that these are the only low fat methods we should be using on any diet. And whatever we eat, plainer is better to control calories. So what are all these recipes doing in a book that is supposed to be redirecting our attention away from food? Is it a case of mutual fool-yourself-time? The diet authors know that unless their menus have taste, and enticing pictures or detailed ingredient lists, no one will select their plan and they’ll lose money. In their real diet plan outline, they identify what is allowed and what is forbidden. Their recipe section might have been written by someone else. Certainly there are substitutions made to qualify as diet food but desserts, dips, and brunches? We bury our heads in the sand, keep taunting ourselves with those addictive sweet flavors, and crow about the minimal number of calories in a serving of the dish (a thimbleful size - check the small print on how many people this little dish is supposed to serve). Admit it, the only reason we crave recipes is to spice something up, to increase our pleasure and make the whole dieting task less painful. We can eat food plain without any fancy recipes but that would be no fun. So we convince ourselves that all the stuff we are adding to our basics: low fat gravy, liquid margarine instead of butter, lemon and capers in place of tartar sauce, vinegar and oil rather than creamy Ranch, and a variety of sugar substitutes are all allowed in our plan so we might as well enjoy. And then we are surprised and disappointed when the weight loss stops. It must be my glands! Virginia Bola is a licensed psychologist and an admitted diet fanatic. She specializes in therapeutic reframing and the effects of attitudes and motivation on individual goals. What Can I Eat That Won’t Make Me Fat?

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Dan Curtis There is no magic formula to losing weight. If there was there wouldnt be a new diet book on the market every week. But there is one thing that comes as close to it as you will ever get: protein. If there was one magic bullet to weight loss, protein is it. Protein was the original diet food. Remember the old fashioned diners years ago? They had the diet plate, and it was a hamburger patty and a salad. It wasnt the salad that was the diet part, it was the hamburger. To know why protein works for weight loss, you have to understand a little bit about it. Protein is made up of small building blocks called amino acids. When your body takes in protein it breaks it down to these amino acids, which then go through your blood to all parts of your body. Every cell needs amino acids. Then when the amino acids get to the cells they are put back together. The body uses them to make muscle, and there is muscle everywhere. It is in your arms and legs and abs. And when these muscles build up they burn up a lot of calories, and this helps you lose weight. There is also muscle in your heart and in your arteries. Extra protein makes these muscles strong so you wont have a heart attack or a stroke. Protein is also used to make antibodies to fight off infections and keep you well. So you need it to have a body that is lean and healthy and strong. Bodies that are lean and healthy and strong are beautiful. But the benefits of protein even go beyond that. You might wonder what happens if you overeat on protein. Wont that just get turned into fat too? Not likely. It is very hard for your body to make fat from protein. For one thing, it takes energy to break protein down to amino acids and then make these amino acids into fat. And this burns up calories. But there is another benefit to protein when you are trying to take weight off. This is the effect of protein on your metabolism. When you have a fast metabolism your body burns calories quickly. When you have a slow metabolism your body burns up calories slowly and you tend to gain weight easily. There is an effect of protein on your metabolism that scientists have known about for a long time. It is called the specific dynamic action of protein. What this means is that when you eat protein your bodys metabolism speeds up for a period of time. And when it speeds up it uses more calories. Your body knows what you are putting into it. It knows that proteins are used for building strong bones and muscles and nerves. When you take in protein it knows it is time to get busy, to build, and to make your body strong. It knows that you are giving it the fuel it needs and the building blocks it needs, so it goes into action. This is the specific dynamic action of protein, and it happens whenever you eat protein. When you eat protein your metabolism speeds up and you burn more calories. So this is one of the keys to your weight loss success. Eat protein frequently and in small amounts. It should be lean and it doesnt need to be much. A couple of ounces is more than enough. Do this and you will take a giant step on your road to permanent weight loss. History of Parsley: Parsley in Greek History

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By D. Perse Native to Mediterranean, parsley has been cultivated and used in culinary and medicine for thousands of years. In times of Hippocrates (he was born around the year 460 BC on the Greek island of Kos) parsley has been used in cure-all remedies, as antidote to poisons, to cure rheumatism, for relieving kidney and bladder stones and more. In Homers Odyssey (written sometime between 800 and 600 BC) theres a description of parsley, growing on an island, named Ogygia. About a century later, the winners of Nemean and Isthmus sporting events were crowned with the wreaths made of parsley. It is interesting that ancient Greeks used parsley for everything but cooking and eating. The legend says that parsley has first sprouted from the blood of Archemorus (hero in Greek mythology: the Forerunner of death) and was therefore sacred to the dead. The tombs of deceased were decorated with parsley. A crown of wild olive was given to the victor at Olympia, and laurel at Delphi. And at the Isthmian Games pine leaves, at the Nemean Games parsley, as we know from the cases of Palaemon and Archemorus. But most games have a crown of palm as the prize, and everywhere the palm is put into the right hand of the victor. (Pausanias: Description of Greece, c. 175 CE) Traditional Greek recipes (just as abundant with history as Greeks mythology) use flat leaf parsley, a lot of it, many times even as a vegetable, in huge amounts, above all in stews. Today, with many of the ancient claims scientifically confirmed, we know that parsley is rich in vitamins (especially A and C) and minerals. It is also said to help eliminate the toxins out of ones body, remove or inactivate free radicals, help with rheumatoid arthritis and lessen inflammations. With high chlorophyll content parsley is also a great natural breath freshener. Just like parsley is a saying, still used in Greece for the person, who appears to be everywhere, without any significant role. How to Get the Best Out of Trade Show Services

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Dick Wheeler Youve heard the expression–The devils in the details. This is especially applicable to trade show exhibiting where success hinges on all the big and little things that constitute a trade show appearance. The process starts with the obvious: selecting the right trade shows to attend; designing a high quality exhibit booth to properly portray your company; and arranging to get the trade show display to the exhibit floor on time. Your trade show exhibit builder has the expertise to help you make your event a success. But it can often be any one of the following pesky details relating to trade show services, which, if overlooked, can undermine an otherwise well-planned trade show experience. Here are ten key recommendations from Tips & Techniques for Exhibiting Success by Nomadic Display: 1. Study the exhibitor service manual. The manual is the key to what you need to know about each trade show. As every show has its own set of rules, regulations and deadlines, carefully examine the manuals information. Read the fine print in exhibitor instructions, delivery information and trade show services contracts. Complete the required registration and services order forms accurately and retain copies for future reference. 2. Make a list of all the trade show services you need. If you plan for your display requirements and order well in advance, you will avoid those costly last minute services that can play havoc with your trade show budget. Make decisions about the extra utilities you need, as well as carpeting, furniture, cleaning and security. 3. Understand the trade show floor plan. Analyze the exhibit hall floor plan and your booth location in respect to traffic flow and proximity to food courts, service entrances and sound system equipment. Examine plan specifications, however small, indicating ceiling heights, pillar locations, even heating and air conditioning ducting. 4. Identify utility sources. Contact the exhibit builder to determine how much electrical power you will need for your display. Always make provisions for backup utilities to guarantee that your power-driven components will function dependably. Check the trade show floor plan to find out where the utility ports are located with relation to your space. 5. Understand drayage. Drayage involves delivering your display materials from the loading dock to their assigned space, removing empty crates, returning the crates at the end of the show and transporting the re-crated materials back to the dock.Save money by consolidating all equipment and containers as part of one single shipment. 6. Arrange for adequate carpeting. Install your utilities first before laying the carpet to reduce the number of carpet cuts for electrical outlets. Remember to order enough carpet to cover the bare concrete strip between the display and the aisle. Order a decent quality carpet and underlayment. Your trade show booth staffs feet will appreciate it at the end of the day. 7. Allow extra time for customs if your company is shipping an exhibit overseas. You need the correct documentation for your container contents, which may be opened and inspected at a port of entry. Use a reliable custom house broker or freight forwarder to coordinate arrangements and keep you posted as to the progress of your shipment. 8. Get to know your trade show services representatives. These are the folks employed by the exhibition organization who are paid to be helpful contacts for exhibitors. They can be of great value to you by fielding your questions and finding ready solutions to any problems you encounter at the trade show. 9. Know how best to work with union labor. As union rules differ in each city, be sure to read the showplace manual to learn what union rules, regulations and charges apply. If you have questions, contact the trade show management or theservice contractor. Consider engaging your trade show exhibit display house to provide installation supervision in order to arrange for a problem-free setup. 10. Bring all important trade show related files, contracts and paperwork to the trade show. This includes copies of trade show floor plans, exhibit installation service orders, tracking documents for all shipments, contact names, phone, fax and email numbers. Remember that attention to the myriad details of trade show planning and execution can make or break your trade show appearance. It is important that you are familiar with the trade show rules. Call upon the expertise of your exhibit builder and show services representatives to help you have a successful and seamless trade show experience. Payday Loans, A Viable Option?

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=John_Williams]John Williams What are payday loans? Payday loans are short-term loans that are extended between two pay days. A payday loan is normally provided for 14 days. The borrower, on acceptance of the loan conditions, provides a check favoring the lender as security against the loan. On the due date, the lender deposits this check to recover the loan dues. The due date is generally the next pay day of the borrower. No credit checks are conducted for granting payday loans. Therefore, the FICO score of the borrower is irrelevant. It doesnt matter whether the borrower has a bad credit history, or has no credit history, or has declared bankruptcy. Qualifications for payday loans To qualify for a payday loan, the borrower needs to fulfill all of the following conditions. There are no exceptions. You must be a US citizen. You must at least 18 years of age. You must be at a full time job currently and must be at this job for at least three months. You must either have an active checking account or a savings account. Your after tax salary should be at least $ 1,000 or you must have a fixed income of $800. Cost of payday loans Payday loans carry a very high cost. Generally the lender fees for a $ 100 payday loan is anywhere between $15 and $25. It should be remembered that this fee is for 14 days as the loan itself is extended for these many days only. If one considers the cost on an annual percentage rate (APR) basis, the average is 391%, which by any standard is exorbitant. By law, it is mandatory for the lender to specify the APR to the borrower. Many lenders do compare the cost of payday loan against other forms of financing; but the common denominator of such a comparison is that all of them are very expensive. When to avail of payday loans? Payday loans should be availed only during emergencies. Considering the fact that the cost of carrying a payday loan is very high, it should be a resource of last resort. If one implements good budgeting techniques and has a good financial plan, the need for borrowing by way of payday loans can be minimized. Moreover, one must ensure that a payday loan is paid on time. Payday loans should not be rolled over or extended as within no time the borrower will find himself or herself in a debt trap where money may have to be borrowed just to repay the interest. Profile of a payday loan borrower A typical payday loan customer is between 25 and 40 years of age with an annual income anywhere between $ 25,000 and $ 50,000. According to the US Census report of Year 2000, the results of the payday loan borrowers survey are: 22% of those surveyed hold a bachelors degree. 51% of those surveyed have a retirement savings plan. In excess of two-thirds of those surveyed have a savings account. More than two-thirds of those surveyed have an annual income of at least $ 25,555. Why are Payday loans popular? They are popular for a number of reasons such as: Credit checks are not required. The personal check that you make payable to the lender acts as security. Approval is quick. If all the necessary documents are submitted, your loan application maybe approved in minutes. The paperwork involved is simple. Generally one or two documents would suffice which explains the loan process and your obligations. The repayment process is without hassles. The check submitted as security is encashed on the next payday by the lender. You could extend the loan to subsequent paydays for a fee. However this is very expensive. Easy availability. Payday loans are particularly appropriate for emergency situations provided the amount required is small and one is willing to bear the high cost of the loan. In summary, payday loans might be a viable option if you need cash and need it fast. You still should be careful who you are working with to obtain your loan. If you don’t need money right away, there is probably a better solution for you.
